In the early days, Potong Pasir was a sand quarry. Potong Pasir in Malay mean cut sand. All the ponds which were sand quarries in Potong Pasir have been filled up and high rise flats built over them.

Potong Pasir Town Council was formed in 1989 by virtue of an Act of Parliament The Town Councils Act, Chapter 329A. Since its inception, Mr Chiam See Tong has been its Chairman.
